PEMBROKE, Mass — A student at a Pembroke elementary school was taken to a hospital Friday after removing an edible from the backpack of a paraprofessional at the school.

Although the Hobomock Elementary School student did not eat the edible and was unaffected, staff members immediately reported the incident and the child was transported to South Shore Hospital.

In a letter to families, school officials say the student opened the worker’s backpack and removed the edible containing a small amount of cannabis during school Friday morning.

The paraprofessional has been placed on paid administrative leave pending an investigation, according to Pembroke schools.

“I am grateful to everyone involved at the school for immediately following all of the appropriate protocols. In addition to notifying the child’s parents, we have contacted the Pembroke Police Department, which has begun an investigation, and the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families,” said Superintendent Erin Obey in a statement.
