Pelham police warn of recent ‘brushing scam’

PELHAM, Mass. — Pelham police are warning the public about a recent trend of ‘brushing’ scams around the country.

The scam typically involves when someone receives an item or a gift that they may not have ordered from Amazon or any other form of online shopping company. These items could vary from jewelry, toys, electronics, etc.

However, the sender of the item is not listed anywhere on the package. Once a person opens the package, there is a QR code that tells the person to scan it to find out who sent the gift.

Once that QR code is scanned, any and all information on that person’s phone will be breached, allowing the scammer to gain complete access to that person’s phone and financial information. The scammer then drains all of that person’s finances.

Police are saying that the gift you receive can be kept, but that the QR code should not be scanned whatsoever.

The Pelham Police Department is advising people to keep their eyes open for any unusual or unexpected gifts.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
