BILLERICA, Mass. — A pedestrian was fatally struck on Route 3 in Billerica early Monday morning moments after they managed to escape the fiery wreckage of a car crash on the side of the highway, authorities said.
Troopers responding to a report of a car fire with possible entrapment on the northbound side of Route 3 in the area of Treble Cove Road just after midnight found a mangled sedan that had gone through the guardrail and a seriously injured person who had climbed out of the fire, according to Massachusetts State Police.
The victim, whose name hasn’t been released, was pronounced dead at the scene.
“The preliminary investigation indicates that a Honda Accord crashed and caught fire,” state police said in a statement. “After the operator exited the vehicle, a Mercedes struck them in the left travel lane.”
It wasn’t immediately clear if the Mercedes driver stayed at the scene.
Route 3 was closed until shortly before 4 a.m. for the safety of motorists and first responders, according to state police.
The Billerica Fire Department helped extinguish the flames while Billerica police assisted with traffic diversion.
The initial and subsequent crashes remain under investigation.
