CHELMSFORD, Mass. — A pedestrian was struck and killed by a tractor-trailer in Chelmsford on Thursday afternoon. State Police said the accident occurred on Route 3 Northbound neat exit 84 after 3 p.m.
Emergency crews arrived on scene and observed a 2014 Nissan Rogue disabled in the breakdown lane and a tractor-trailer, operated by a 44-year-old man from Cambridge, stopped approximately 300 feet ahead.
Officers immediately located the driver of the Nissan, a 77-year-old man, who was suffering from serious injuries after being struck by the tractor-trailer.
State troopers said the victim was outside of the vehicle at the time of the crash.
The exact cause and circumstances of the crash, including why the Nissan was stopped and why the operator was outside of the vehicle, remain under investigation.
The first and second travel lanes were closed for approximately three hours Thursday afternoon in order to facilitate the crash investigation.
