Peabody Police Department mourning ‘tragic, sudden’ death of officer

PEABODY, Mass. — The Peabody Police Department is mourning the “tragic and sudden” death of an officer who didn’t survive complications that arose during a non-emergency surgery, authorities announced Thursday.

“With a tremendously heavy heart and true sadness, I must share news of the tragic and sudden passing of Officer Henry Breckenridge,” Peabody Police Chief Tom Griffin said in a statement. “Henry was one of the nicest and most gentle people I have had the honor to know. I know that sentiment is shared throughout our department and with the entire Peabody community.”

Griffin didn’t detail the type of surgery Breckenridge was having but said that he passed away despite “heroic efforts” from Salem Hospital staff.

The department is remembering Breckenridge as a dedicated officer who had a “firm grasp on community policing.”

“He will be greatly missed. He was well regarded by all sectors of our community, but particularly by our young citizens,” Giffin added. “There has been an outpouring of support and tributes in his honor from many young people whose lives he has impacted positively. These are testaments to the caliber of his character which include authenticity, kindness, and compassion.”

Griffin also said that Breckenridge will be remembered for his kind eyes, joyous laughter, and trademark smile.

There was no immediate word on wake and funeral services.
