Winter storm warning issued in parts of Mass. for significant snow on Tuesday

DEDHAM, Mass. — A winter storm warning has been issued for a system expected to dump several inches of plowable snow across Massachusetts early next week.

The winter storm watch was issued by the National Weather Service for Central Middlesex County; Eastern Essex; Eastern Franklin; Eastern Hampden; Eastern Hampshire; Eastern Norfolk; Northern Worcester; Northwest Middlesex County; Southeast Middlesex; Southern Worcester; Suffolk; Western Essex; Western Hampden and Western Norfolk counties until February 14 at 1 a.m.

“Around 5:06 a.m. you’re seeing heavy snow begin to take over the interior and on the coastline, South Shore, Cape and islands in the south coastline as well. There will be some mixing before it’s cold enough for that transition to snow,” Meteorologist Tucker Antico said in his Sunday night forecast.

A winter storm watch is in effect for Western Franklin; Western Hampshire, Eastern Plymouth; Northern Bristol; Southern Bristol; Southern Plymouth; Western Plymouth, Northern Berkshire, and Southern Berkshire until February 14 at 1 a.m.

While Antico says it’s too early to get an exact picture of the early morning Tuesday snowstorm, most of Massachusetts will see huge snow totals.

“North Shore is going to be on that 8 to 12-inch range. Boston should be around 10 inches. I believe there will be pretty sharp cut off here in southern New Hampshire,” according to Antico.

While most of the Bay State will see close to a foot of the white stuff, areas along the coast like the South Shore and Cape Cod will see some mixing.

“So say you live somewhere like Marshfield, you might get seven inches, whereas areas about ten miles inland could be looking at 9 or 10. Coastline on the Cape, especially the south coast, closer to 2 to 5. Islands, you may be lucky to see two inches just because that’s where again, temps will be a bit milder once this storm is out of here,” says Antico.

According to Antico, coastal areas will also be prone to minor or moderate flooding because of the easterly wind direction.

“Make sure you’re prepared on the coastline if you’re in a place that’s more prone to flooding. Now, once we get to the afternoon, you’re going to see quick drying on the backside of this,” says Antico. “We may continue to see snow until about 3:00 p.m. on the Cape and Islands, could be closer to four or so.”

A high wind watch is also in effect for Barnstable, Dukes, and Nantucket counties until 10 p.m. on Tuesday.

The worst of the storm will be here Tuesday morning but lingering effects will still be here Tuesday afternoon.

The snow will be out by Tuesday evening, according to Antico.
