Onset Fire Department responds to four-alarm structure fire

ONSET, Mass. — The Onset Fire Department responded to a four-alarm fire Saturday afternoon which prompted multiple mutual aid to respond.

Crews were dispatched around 11:38 a.m. after calls came from a large multi-occupational building to report a fire within.

Upon arrival, crews noticed heavy smoke coming from the building. Fire crews created a command center and issued a working fire assignment.

Once entry was made into the building, multiple significant fires were encountered in two of the rooms.

A fourth-alarm was struck, issuing 7 other fire crews to respond, totaling 60 firefighters at the scene.

After the fire was under control, crews noticed the fire had caused a hazardous condition when one of the rooms contained a large amount of Lithium-Ion batteries. A Hazardous Materials Response Team was requested to identify and mitigate the hazard.

Crews from Wareham Fire District, Wareham EMS, Wareham Police, Bourne Fire Department, Marion Fire Department, Plymouth Fire Department, Middleboro Fire Department, and Carver Fire Department. Sandwich and Plymouth Fire Departments provided coverage to Onset’s Fire Station. Department of Fire Services provided an Incident Support Unit and Rehab truck as well as the Providence Canteen truck also assisted at the scene with providing rehab services to the firefighters.

One firefighter was injured and transported to Tobey Hospital but has since been released.

The cause of fire is currently being investigated.
