One year after fatal accident, Brockton park bench dedicated to worker killed in Boston

Many years ago, Peter Monsini would bring his son, Anthony, to D.W. Field Park in Brockton.

“He’d bring him here for a little picnic, feed the ducks,” said his uncle, Pio Monsini. “Peter used to come to this park a lot.”

On Sunday, the community honored the late Peter Monsini at the Brockton park by dedicating a waterside bench in his memory.

Last March, Monsini was killed while working on a demolition project at the Government Center garage in Boston. He was 51.

“All he wanted to be was in a seat of a machine and doing his job,” said his uncle, Pio. “He loved the demolition business.”

By all accounts, Peter Monsini also loved his family and friends, and one of them is Brockton Mayor Robert Sullivan.

“Peter and I went to Brockton High together, we played football together,” said Sullivan. “The Monsini family is just a wonderful family -- here in the city for generations. Peter was a great guy. Always had a smile on his face. Just a tragedy. An absolute tragedy. (He was) a young guy with just a lot of life left to live.”

“Peter was so full of life,” said his partner, Alicia Anacleto. “He just loved making people happy and making them smile. And he was a hard worker and would give you the shirt off his back and not expect anything in return. And he was an awesome Dad.”

Anacleto said she is “hanging in there.”

“You know, I’m taking it one day at a time,” she said. “And I have my family and Peter’s family to get me through it.”

Peter’s mother, Brenda, said the bench at the Brockton park is a place the family will visit as they continue grieving the loss of her son.

“I’m doing the best I can, holding on,” she said.
