WALTHAM, Mass. — State Police and Fire officials responded to a Waltham construction site after nearly a dozen pieces of old military ammunition were recovered.
Waltham police received a report of an unknown item found by a construction crew digging at 43 Foundry Avenue around 10:45 a.m. Monday, according to Deputy Chief Steven Champeon.
State Fire Marshal’s Office says the items in question were cannonballs of various sizes.
“After visual inspection and interviews at the scene, bomb techs and a heavy equipment operator were able to carefully dislodge several more of these items from a pipe in the trench. They inspected the surrounding area for similar ordnance and found none.
State Police Bomb Squad and Personnel from the ATF assessed these items and removed about 13 ordinances without incident.
A Hazmat team also responded because of initial concerns about possible environmental hazards.
No reports of any injuries, or danger to the public.
