FITCHBURG, Mass. — Officials are investigating after a police officer-involved shooting in Fitchburg Sunday morning.
Officers received a report of a man without a shirt and wearing brown pants making suicidal statements on Lunenburg Street around 9:23 a.m., Fitchburg Mayor Sam Squailia posted on Facebook.
When officers arrived on the scene, an “encounter between a Fitchburg Police officer and this male subject resulted in a discharge of the officer’s weapon,” according to Squailia.
The man shot was transported to a local hospital by a medical helicopter, Squailia said.
Squailiawrote that she has been communicating with Fitchburg Police Chief Ernest Martineau regarding the shooting and that state troopers assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney’s office are assisting with the investigation.
As per department policy, the 2-year officer has been placed on administrative leave.
“I will share further information as I am able to with you as it comes from the DA and State Police,” the mayor wrote.
