BOSTON — Kristopher Carr, a 25-year-old Massachusetts State Police recruit, is charged with a deadly DWI crash that killed a 51-year-old Winthrop motorcyclist early Friday morning.
According to prosecutors, Carr was intoxicated when he crashed his SUV into the median of Route 93 South near Exit 12 sometime after 1 a.m. Friday. Carr’s SUV blocked two lanes on Route 93.
Shortly after the crash, 51-year-old Christopher Zike, riding a Honda motorcycle, collided with Carr’s SUV. Zike was pronounced dead at Boston Medical Center.
At Carr’s arraignment, prosecutor Amanda Cascione said Carr and a woman spent the hours before the fatal crash drinking at three Boston establishments. The woman told police Kristopher Carr consumed up to seven drinks during the night, including whiskey, beer, and vodka seltzer. The woman told police she was in the SUV with Carr.
“She indicated the defendant was operating and her memory of the incident is that they were driving south on Route 93,” Cascione said. “She indicated to troopers that the defendant leaned over to attempt to kiss her. And the next thing she remembers happening is the collision and the airbags being deployed.”
On Friday, victim Christopher Zike was remembered by friends as a caring, humble man, who had a love for trees.
“He is truly one of those people who has this core of goodness, he just does things because they were the right thing to do,” Diana Viens said. “In the blink of an eye, this person ripped away someone who was extremely valuable to this world and this community and to his family and to his friends.”
The Massachusetts State Police terminated Kristopher Carr. Carr was released on $5,000 cash bail and is due back in court in January.
