DEDHAM, Mass. — It was hugs all around after authorities rescued a pair of baby raccoons from a chimney on Monday afternoon.
The kits eyes weren’t even open yet, meaning they’re likely only two-weeks-old, according to the Dedham Animal Control Department.
Wildlife officials say that fireplace chimneys have been a popular spot for raccoons this season, as it provides the necessary shelter for the animals to berth their young.
Most chimneys have smoke shelves which serve as a solid nesting spot for the animals to have their babies, according to animal control.
One way to avoid any wildlife encounters in your chimney is to place a cap on top as a preventative measure.
If that doesn’t work, authorities say the best way to get rid of any critters living in your chimney is to make loud noises, shine bright lights, and/or place rags soaked with vinegar, or other substances that emit a strong odor. Most animals abhor the smell and will evacuate the chimney.
Despite their cute appearance, officials strongly urge against any unnecessary exposures or physical contact with wild raccoons, as they can be carriers of Rabies.
