‘Be aware’: NH State Police boosting patrols on waterways after 3 separate water-related deaths

GILFORD, N.H. — One week after three people died in separate water-related incidents in New Hampshire, the State Police Marine Patrol is beefing up patrols on waterways to watch for unsafe boating conditions and to encourage boater safety.

“Due to the extensive rainfall received and expected throughout the State of New Hampshire, Officers from New Hampshire State Police Marine Patrol will continue to monitor the conditions on our waterways while maintaining additional patrols to encourage boaters to operate safely,” state police said in a Facebook post on Friday, followed by another post on Saturday.

The posts came one week after three people were killed, including two people from Massachusetts, after three separate incidents in New Hampshire waters on July 7, state police said.

Keoni Hubbard, a Boy Scout attending camp who was a middle-school student in Lexington, Massachusetts, was killed in a boating accident in Gilmanton. State Police said two other people reportedly drowned in separate incidents, including Amy Posocco, 41, of Beverly, Massachusetts, and Shawn Barton, 40, with an unknown address.

Barton’s body was found on the Piscataquog River in Manchester, near the border of Goffstown, state police said.

Posocco had been swimming with a group of her family members on Middle Pea Porridge Pond in Madison when she failed to return to shore, state police said.

State Police Marine Patrol “urges all boaters to be mindful of your wake and the impact to the shoreline, docks, and wildlife,” state police said.

“Utilize extra caution when operating in channels or close to shore. Please be aware of the potential for floating debris and navigational hazards now underwater that are normally visible,” state police advised.
