If you’re interested in science and enjoy the outdoors, this international non-profit based right here in Newton has an experience waiting just for you.

Earthwatch specializes in bringing people from all walks of life together with scientists to help them collect their research data and help solve important environmental challenges.

The research trips or expeditions, last 1-2 weeks and can take you just about anywhere.

The discoveries you make and the data you collect contribute directly to publications and policies that lead to a more sustainable future.

Earthwatch works with corporations and students to create unforgettable experiences for those who want to give back.

One of those companies is Ernst & Young, and we spoke with Jane Steinmetz, managing principal of their Boston office, about her experience as a citizen scientist.

Jane told us that she went with her daughter and enjoyed working with her as a peer while safely tagging owls for the purpose of studying how they are responding to climate change.

We also caught up with Tina Li, a junior at Brookline high school. Her trip to Acadia National Park in Maine gave her the confidence she needed to step out of her comfort zone and follow her dreams.

If you want to venture out on an expedition and take action for a more sustainable future but the cost is a concern, don’t be discouraged. Earthwatch has resources and fundraising tools to help you!
