Multiple people hospitalized after 15-vehicle, chain-reaction crash on Massachusetts Turnpike

BRIMFIELD, Mass. — Multiple people were taken to the hospital following a chain-reaction crash involving more than a dozen trucks and cars on the Massachusetts Turnpike late Thursday night.

Emergency crews responding to a report of a crash on the eastbound side of the highway in Brimfield shortly before 11:30 p.m. found about 15 tractor-trailers and vehicles that had crashed as freezing rain made for treacherous driving conditions, according to Massachusetts State Police.

The condition of those who were taken to the hospital wasn‘t immediately known.

One photo taken at the scene showed an SUV resting on top of a crumpled sedan. Both of those vehicles were wedged between tractor-trailers.

The stretch of highway in the area appeared to be coated with ice and sleet at the time of the wreck. MassDOT had implemented speed limit restrictions from the New York boarder to Boston during the storm.

A similar crash was reported earlier in the night on Route 2 westbound in Lexington, where about 12 vehicles slid off the icy highway. There were no significant injuries reported.

An investigation remains ongoing.
