SOMERVILLE, Mass. — Five firefighters were hurt battling a fire at parking garage at Assembly Row in Somerville early Wednesday morning, fire chief Charles Breen told Boston 25 News.
The fire department was notified at 2:20 a.m. of a fire in the parking garage at 449 Canal Street.
When they arrived, firefighters found heavy smoke coming from the garage and a fire on the fourth floor.
The fire destroyed four cars and damaged a fifth car.
“Heat from the burning vehicles also resulted in a portion of concrete collapsing,” Breen said. “Three firefighters were injured by the falling section of concrete.”
Two other firefighters suffered minor injuries.
The fire also spread to a void space between the garage and the adjacent Montaje Apartments, igniting a rubber membrane between the two structures.
The fire spread up to the roof of the garage and dropped burning debris down to the first floor.
Firefighters from Everett and Cambridge assisted Somerville firefighters.
Breen said the cause of the fire is under investigation.
