MBTA officials identify employee killed after being hit by bus in Charlestown bus yard

BOSTON — An MBTA employee died Monday morning after being hit by a bus in the MBTA bus yard in Charlestown, according to Steve Poftak, general manager of the MBTA.

Later in the day, Poftak identified the employee as Bernadin Etienne, 62, who had been working with the transportation agency for 18 years. Etienne was heading to his bus to start his workday when he was hit and killed.

Poftak briefed the media on Etienne’s death at a meeting with the Fiscal and Management Control Board on Monday morning.

According to Poftak, Etienne was “obviously someone who was well liked by his colleagues and performed admirably in his duties here at the T.” He also added this was a “tragic, tragic day” for the MBTA.

The MBTA said Etienne was transported to Massachusetts General Hospital with serious injuries following the accident, but later died.

“I have had the opportunity to speak with several members of his family and convey on behalf of the entire organization - and obviously on behalf of the board - our deep regret at his tragic passing and also to encourage them, to the extent that they’re comfortable, if and when there will be any type of memorial service or remembrance, we would obviously like to ensure that his colleagues have the opportunity to remember him,” said Poftak.

Investigators are working to determine the facts and circumstances.
