BOSTON — The MBTA has finished work on the Green Line to eliminate slow zones on all lines for the first time in decades.
The Track Improvement Program started more than a year ago in November 2023 to eliminate 191 speed restrictions and bring all tracks into a five-year state of good repair
Crews replaced more than 100,000 feet of rail over the last 13 months and their goal was to improve safety, and speed and reduce delays.
Crews worked to eliminate the final few slow zones between Park Street, Medford-Tufts, and Union Squareover the past two weeks.
According to the MBTA, travel times are 60 minutes faster on the Red Line, 21 minutes on the Orange Line, nine minutes on the Green Line, and four minutes on the Blue Line.
The Red Line was slow zone-free as of November 25.
“I’m proud of the tremendous amount of work we’re accomplishing. The track in these areas of the Red Line is very challenging for crews to be able to access, but our workforce was given the unencumbered time on the track that they needed to finally do the work to completely remove these slow zones,” said MBTA General Manager and CEO Phillip Eng.
Eng says that delays may still pop up form time to time to address signal issues.
