YARMOUTH, Mass. — The Yarmouth Fire Department is investigating the cause of a massive fire at the former Yarmouth Port Inn.
The fire department said it was just before 6:30 p.m. Sunday night that a passerby called to report the fire at the old Yarmouth Port Inn.
Anthony’s Cummaquid Inn has been closed for several years and the fire department said there were no known civilian injuries.
The fire spread quickly throughout the building and threatened other buildings on the property along with area of brush.
Yarmouth Fire ordered a second alarm and help was brought in from Brewster, Dennis, and Hyannis on top of the mutual aid already there from Barnstable, Dennis, Hyannis, and an ambulance from Harwich.
Crews worked for several hours to get the fire under control with one fire department suffering a minor injury and they were evaluated at the scene.
Monday morning, only five chimneys were left standing at the site of the inn.
Firefighters also cut down trees at the front of the building that had caught fire.
The cause of the fire is still unknown and under investigation.
Just two days ago the Yarmouth Fire Department posted about the very high fire danger, pointing out that gusty winds, mild temps, dry fuels, and low humidity will be favorable for the rapid spread of wildfires.
Outdoor fires of any kind are prohibited in Yarmouth until further notice.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
