PALM BEACH, Florida — Wind farms off the coast of Massachusetts are “driving whales crazy,” causing an uptick in deaths involving the marine mammals, according to President-elect Donald Trump.
Trump commented on the Bay State’s wind farms and whale deaths as he delivered wide-ranging remarks on his agenda and presidential transition from Mar-a-Lago in Palm Beach, Florida, on Tuesday, a day after the 2024 election results were certified by Congress.
“They are dangerous. You see what’s happening up in the Massachusetts area with the whales, where they had two whales wash ashore in I think a 17-year period,” Trump said of the wind farms. “Now, they had 14 this season. The windmills are driving the whales crazy.”
Whales have recently been found washed up on Massachusetts beaches in Plymouth, Marshfield, Brewster, and Hull.
Trump’s remarks came after NOAA Fisheries reported elevated levels of unusual deaths involving mostly humpback whales along the Atlantic Coast in 2024.
Despite the increased number of deaths, NOAA attributes many of the whale fatalities to boating accidents and entanglements with fishing line nets.
Trump repeatedly said during his campaign that the United States needs to reduce the number of wind farms. He doubled down on that Tuesday, vowing to halt the development of “garbage” wind farms.
“We are going to have a policy where no windmills are being built,” Trump stated.
Trump is set to be sworn in as the 47th American president on January 20.
