Police identify suspect in multi-state chase that started in Massachusetts

WESTPORT, Mass. — Massachusetts State Police have identified a man who they say drove at troopers in Westport before leading police on a multi-state chase through Rhode Island and Connecticut.

Ian Grant, 36, was arrested at approximately 2 p.m. following a standoff in North Stonington, Conn., according to police. Police say a fire at his home in Dartmouth, Mass. Wednesday morning is also under investigation.

Police say shortly after 11 a.m., New Bedford Police tried to stop Grant for a warrant that charged him with assault and intimidation of a witness.

He fled in a white Toyota Tacoma and headed west on Interstate 195, where State Police troopers tried to deflate his tires, according to police. Police say Grant drove onto the median at troopers, hitting two cruisers, before crossing over to the eastbound side of the highway into oncoming traffic.

Police say at least one trooper fired at Grant as he drove at them.

State Police did not pursue Grant on the other side of the highway and asked surrounding agencies to look out for the truck, according to police.

The truck was later seen in Jamestown, R.I., where the pursuit resumed on Route 1. The chase went into Charlestown, R.I. and continued west onto Route 78 into Connecticut, according to police.

Police say the truck went off the road on Route 2 around 1 p.m. Officers surrounded the vehicle and took Grant into custody after about an hour of negotiations, according to police.

Massachusetts State Police say some troopers at the scene in Westport were evaluated for stress at an area hospital and have since been released.

Grant was arrested by Connecticut State Police for the charge of Engaging in Pursuit, Reckless Driving, Failure to Maintain Proper Lane, Interfering, and Reckless Endangerment, according to police.

Grant was held on a $200,000.00 bond and is scheduled to be arraigned in New London Superior Court Thursday.

Grant will face further charges in both Massachusetts and Rhode Island.
