SHREWSBURY, Mass. — A police investigation is underway after a Shrewsbury High School student reported an unknown man grabbed her as she walked home after taking a late bus from school on Monday, the school district’s leader said.
Shrewsbury Superintendent of Schools Joe Sawyer said that police began investigating Monday night after receiving a report about the female student being assaulted while on her way home from school.
The girl took the late bus home from Shrewsbury High School, and was dropped off at Stoney Hill Road and walked along a path in a wooded area to the Cherry Hill/Cherry Street neighborhood with another student, Sawyer said in a statement on Tuesday.
The student “reported that she was physically grabbed by an unknown older male individual. The report indicated that the student reacted and the individual released her and ran off,” Sawyer said.
Sawyer said Shrewsbury Police are actively investigating the incident “and will be increasing their presence at that location.”
Anyone with any information about the incident is asked to call Shrewsbury Police at 508-841-8577.
“I wanted to make you aware of this situation directly, and ask that families remind your children about your rules regarding safety and strangers and to report anything unusual to you or an adult at school immediately,” Sawyer said.
The superintendent encouraged parents, guardians and students to visit the website of the National Crime Prevention Council for tips on how to stay safe.
