SALEM, Mass. — What we wear can send a powerful message about the impression we want to make. In the past, that might have dictated the blouse or tie a person might choose. In 2020, masks can also make a fashion statement.
The Peabody Essex Museum in Salem has developed a new line of masks at their store. Some are inspired by the museum’s collection, while others are created by local artists
“They became an opportunity,” explained Victor Oliveira, the museum’s director of merchandising. “Let’s make it fun for people. Let’s make it something they want to wear.”
Oliveira said the store has received positive feedback. Some selections have sold out and new designs have been added. Throughout the pandemic, black cloth masks and light blue disposable surgical masks have been the most popular.
As masks have become part of our daily wardrobe, Paula Richter, curator for exhibitions and research, isn’t surprised they’ve become more elaborate.
“Fashion is a very adaptable form of expression and it’s very personal for people,” explained Richter. “When people get up in the morning, they’re trying to make a statement about themselves, where they’re going, what they’re doing.”
Think about the evolution of dress socks: they were once just found in black, brown, and blue. Today, novelty socks are very popular, even with a suit. Hats are another form of expression today. Just look at Patriots QB Cam Newton to get a sense of how that can work.
Despite the challenges of working with a curved, and often pleated, canvas, Richter believes artists will continue to be drawn to drawing on this very visible medium.
“It’s been a tremendous catalyst for creativity,” said Richter. “I think people have a desire right now to express what’s going on and the mask is a very important form of expression in the hands of artists.”
All the masks at the Peabody Essex Museum are $20 or less and can be ordered online.
