Market Basket is America’s best grocery chain amid inflation, study finds

Shoppers file through the checkout lines at a local Market Basket.

TEWKSBURY, Mass. — Market Basket has been named America’s best grocery chain for continuing to offer customers low prices at a time of high inflation, according to a new study.

An inflation edition of the Retailer Preference Index that contains research provided by the customer data firm dunnhumby ranked the nation’s top 69 grocery chain based on information gathered from surveys conducted with 18,000 shoppers.

Each shopper gave their perception of retailer performance on up to three stores where they have bought groceries in the past four weeks, and they were asked questions on five key pillars: “save me money,” “save me time,” “make it better,” “make it seamless,” and “make it dependable.”

Dunnhumby said its analysis focused on identifying grocers that are “best positioned to win during inflation” and create “long-term growth and emotional connections” with customers.

The analysis found that Tewksbury-based Market Basket was the “top grocery retailer for inflationary times.” Market Basket operates 90 stores across New England.

The chain ranked first in the “save me money” pillar, while also checking in as the only retailer to rank top five in both base price perception and mass promotions perceptions.

ALDI, WinCo Foods, Grocery Outlet Bargain Market, and Save A Lot round out the top five grocers in the country.
