MALDEN, Mass. — Hundreds of Malden High School seniors who are planning to attend college or further their education were surprised with $1,000 scholarships from the city’s Mayor.
Malden Mayor Gary Christenson told the class of 2022 during the Malden High School Senior Awards Night on Tuesday that every senior planning on furthering their education at the college level in the fall will be receiving a $1,000 scholarship from the city of Malden.
Almost 85% of the 432 students graduating with the 2022 class are planning to attend college in the fall. The said it will be making close to a $400,000 investment in the future of this year’s graduating class.
“Our students who are graduating in 2022 have endured the brunt of the COVID-19 health crisis. From remote learning to lost earnings opportunity during the pandemic, the impact has been real,” a press release from the mayor’s office said.
The American Rescue Plan Act provides the ability for cities to address the negative impacts of COVID-19. This comes after this year’s class is graduating at a time of unprecedented increases in the cost of attending college.
The mayor said Malden has been hard at work utilizing the ARPA funds to impact the community in a myriad of positive ways.
“We know that the cost of college is daunting to most families, made worse by the impacts of the pandemic,” said Christenson. “We hope that this will make it just a little easier for our families.”
