MINOT, Maine — A man has been arrested after a sheriff’s deputy was shot on Wednesday morning while responding to a disturbance in Minot, state police said.
Corey Hamel, 42, of Minot was identified as the gunman who shot Androscoggin Sgt. Randy Williams, 43, state police said Wednesday afternoon.
Hamel, who was arrested at the scene, is charged with aggravated attempted murder and arson.
Williams was sent by ambulance to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston where he is being treated for a gunshot wound to his upper right leg, state police said. He is expected to survive.
At approximately 4:05 a.m. Wednesday, the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Department received a complaint of a disturbance at 1089 Woodman Hill Road in Minot.
Deputies responded to the residence and found the home engulfed in flames, state police said.
Deputies were in the process of escorting the homeowners from the residence when they were fired upon by a man, later identified as Hamel, at the end of the driveway, state police said.
Williams was struck by gunfire as were several vehicles, state police said. Androscoggin Deputies and Mechanic Falls Officers who were responding to the scene confronted the gunman and were able to take him into custody on the roadway at the end of the driveway. The homeowners were not injured.
Hamel, who was staying at the residence, is “a prohibited person on probation for three separate counts of violation of conditional release,” state police said.
Hamel will be arraigned on Friday at 1 p.m. at Lewiston District Court.
State Police and Fire Marshal Investigators will be on scene throughout Wednesday evening to process the scene.
Crews from surrounding fire departments responded to put out the fire.
Minot is a small town in Androscoggin County, just west of Lewiston, where suspected gunman Robert Card opened fire at a bowling alley and bar in October, killing 18 people and injuring 13 others in a mass shooting before he was found dead inside a trailer.
Minot’s population was 2,766 at the 2020 census.
