SALEM, New Hampshire — An early morning police pursuit in New Hampshire ended after troopers used “spike strips” to deflate the SUV tires of a Lowell man who was allegedly driving erratically on I-93, with a baby in his SUV.
Investigators say they discovered the 8-month-old baby was in the vehicle after those spike strips were deployed, and the car came to a stop with three flat tires.
It all started about 2:30 Saturday morning. New Hampshire State Police say they observed the SUV “operating erratically” on I-93 north in Londonderry.
Police say the SUV then crossed a grassy median before troopers caught up to it and tried to pull the driver over.
Investigators say the driver stopped for a moment, then took off again on I-93 south with police in pursuit and items being tossed from the SUV.
The spike strips were deployed on I-93 in Salem, New Hampshire deflating three of its four tires. The SUV kept going, despite the flat tires, before exiting the highway at Exit 2.
After about a mile, police say, the SUV pulled into a dead-end road and came to stop. That’s when police say they discovered the baby in the SUV.
The baby was not injured and was checked out on the scene by EMTs.
The driver, identified as Travis Tillman, 20, of Lowell was arrested and charged with disobeying a police officer, felony reckless conduct, endangering the welfare of a child, and other charges. Police say Tillman was released on bail.
His other passenger, Hailey Dorr, 21, of Manchester, New Hampshire, was arrested on an unrelated warrant and later released.
