Lobby at Alewife station reopens more than a month after crash left car hanging from parking garage

BOSTON — The MBTA Alewife Station lobby has reopened more than a month after a vehicle crashed into the top floor of the parking garage in early February.

On February 4, around 1:30 p.m., a vehicle plowed through a concrete barrier at the MBTA Alewife station. According to a Transit police officer, the car was partially hanging off the roof of the parking garage, directly above the station’s main mezzanine.

As a result of the collision, concrete debris fell from the garage and shattered glass panels above the lobby and mezzanine area of Alewife Station. A young 14-year-old girl received minor injuries when a 10,000-pound concrete barrier fell onto the glass roof of the train station.

The main entrance of the station had been closed to allow crews to construct a temporary shoring tower to reinforce the station’s roof trusses, the MBTA said.

The shoring tower will remain in place until permanent repairs are made.

The MBTA says that additional station personnel will be present at Alewife on Monday to assist riders.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
