Lawrence man pleads guilty for fatal 2020 shooting

SALEM, Mass, — On Thursday, a Lawrence man was sentenced to state prison after pleading guilty to a fatal 2020 shooting.

Miguel Angel Vega Rodriguez, 23, took the life of 26-year-old Delvis Paulino-Fernandez and wounded 2 others on May 3, 2020, during a backyard gathering on Newton Street.

Vega Rodriguez was charged with:

  • Voluntary manslaughter
  • Two counts of armed assault to murder.
  • Two counts of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury.
  • Carrying a firearm without a license.

A co-defendant in the same case, Hector Baez, 27, of Haverhill and Lawrence, pleaded guilty last year and received a similar sentence.

“Following this guilty plea, Miguel Vega Rodriguez will now face the consequences for his terrible actions,” said Essex County District Attorney Paul F. Tucker. “I greatly appreciate all those who have worked diligently on this case. I would especially like to thank the family of Delvis Paulino-Fernandez, who will not be forgotten.”

Vega Rodriguez faces 22-26 years in state prison, followed by 3 years of probation.
