Large section of Newport’s famed Cliff Walk collapses

NEWPORT, RI — A 20-foot section of Newport, Rhode Island’s famed cliff walk collapsed into the ocean on Thursday.

Pictures posted by Salve Regina University show the damage after the collapse.

Ryan Welch, a photographer for WPRI-TV, took to twitter to document officials bringing in a cadaver dog to search for any possible victims as a result of the collapse. The search was negative, according to Welch’s follow-up post.

The section that collapsed is north of Ochre Court, between Webster Street and Narragansett Avenue, according to the university.

The city of Newport has closed that portion of the Cliff Walk and deemed it a dangerous hazard at this time.

People are being asked to avoid the Cliff Walk between Webster Street and Narragansett Avenue until inspections have been fully completed and the area is declared safe.

The Cliff Walk was designated as a National Recreation Trail in 1975. The walk runs 3.5 miles.

“Winding its way along the eastern shore of Aquidneck Island, the Cliff Walk is world-famous as a public access walk that combines the natural beauty of Newport’s shoreline with the architectural history of the city’s Gilded Age,” according to the City of Newport.
