BOSTON — Keep off the ice.
That’s the message from the Massachusetts State Police, who urged the public on Wednesday to stay on land amid unsafe ice conditions on bodies of water across the Bay State.
“At this time, we’re not confident that the Charles River or any body of water in the Commonwealth has adequately frozen to safely allow for activities like walking, skating, or fishing,” state police said in a statement.
“Before venturing out on the ice, we ask members of the public to use good judgement in the same way swimmers should approach water in the summer,” state police said.
Law enforcement issued the ice safety advisory after police activity earlier Wednesday on the Esplanade in Boston.
Police received a false report of a person falling through the ice.
State police responded, ensured the safety of everyone on scene, and subsequently asked people to “keep off the ice and stay on land.”
The advisory comes after a man and his canine companion found themselves in a dangerous situation over the weekend after falling through the ice in Wellesley.
In New Hampshire over the weekend, authorities found the body of a woman who drowned after falling through the ice on a New Hampshire pond.
If you see anyone in danger, call 911, state police said.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
