Juvenile cited in fatal crash near Mansfield High School involving driver’s ed vehicle, police say

MANSFIELD, Mass. — A juvenile behind the wheel of a driver’s education vehicle has been cited in a fatal crash that killed an elderly passenger near Mansfield High School on Saturday morning, police and the district attorney said.

John Masciarelli, 80, a rear seat passenger of a Toyota Corolla driven by the juvenile, died following the two-vehicle crash at about 8:30 a.m. on East Street at the main entrance of the high school, Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn said in a statement late Saturday afternoon.

The juvenile, a permitted driver who was not identified, was cited for causing the accident when failing to yield to oncoming traffic, police said. The juvenile was driving the Corolla as a student of the Teachers Driving Academy when the crash occurred.

The gray Corolla had extensive damage to the right passenger’s side. The vehicle had a “TDA” sign on its roof.

Masciarelli appeared to suffer a medical episode shortly after the crash, Quinn said. He was taken to Good Samaritan Medical Center in Brockton, where he was later pronounced dead.

The juvenile and a front seat passenger, a road test agent for the Massachusetts Registry of Motor Vehicles, were also taken to Good Samaritan Medical Center for observation and minor injuries.

The driver of the second vehicle, a white Ford Explorer, was taken to Sturdy Memorial Hospital with minor injuries, Quinn said.

The crash is being investigated by the State Police detectives assigned to Quinn’s office, the CARS Unit of the State Police and Mansfield Police.
