‘He loved the city’: Jeep Jones Park reopens in Roxbury with extensive upgrades

City officials officially marked the reopening of Jeep Jones Park in Roxbury on Wednesday morning.

Jeep Jones Park is a 1.7-acre park in Lower Roxbury that is named after Clarence “Jeep” Jones, the first African-American Deputy Mayor of the City of Boston. He died in 2020.

The park at 221 Roxbury St., which has an upper and lower terrace, recently underwent a $670,000 upgrade.

“It has been an honor to partner with the Jones family on this project, and I’m so thrilled for the city of Boston to partner with everyone to create a park worthy of Jeep Jones’ name, that will extend his legacy of promoting Black joy, well being, health and opportunity in our city for generations to come,” Mayor Michelle Wu said Wednesday morning.

Wanda Jones, Jeep’s wife, thanked the public for honoring Jeep’s memory.

Jeep “loved people and he loved the city and he showed it,” she said.

The park includes two full court basketball courts, and has a playground for young children, and the upper terrace playground has been renovated to accommodate older children.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
