An investigation is underway after a car smashed through the front of a Subway sandwich shop, killing one and injuring five others in Smithfield, Rhode Island Wednesday afternoon.

At least two individuals were pinned underneath the car when first responders rushed inside the subway shop on Putnam Pike, Rhode Island State Police told Boston 25 News.

One person was pronounced dead at the scene, state police say. Five others, including the driver, were injured in the incident.

Smithfield Deputy Fire Chief Steven Quattrini told WPRI both customers and workers were among the injured when the car barreled through the front of the shop.

The Subway sustained heavy damage and will be closed until further notice. The neighboring Planet Fitness was also damaged and is currently closed.

The cause of the crash is unknown but an initial investigation revealed the driver was traveling at a high rate of speed through the parking lot.

Joshua Piti told WPRI he had just pulled into the parking lot and was minutes away from heading into the shop to start his shift.

“It was crazy. I couldn’t believe it,” Piti said. “I was just about to go into work, so it could’ve been me.”
