SANDWICH, Mass. — An iconic boardwalk on Cape Cod will not reopen in time for the summer season after it was damaged in a nasty nor’easter last winter.
The Sandwich Boardwalk, often referred to as the “Plank Walk” or the “Mill Creek Foot Bridge,” is about 1,300 feet in length. In a storm on Jan. 31, 2021, about 220 feet of the wood crossing was badly damaged.
Town leaders have not yet awarded a contract for the pending reconstruction project and any work would “likely continue into the fall and early winter,” according to the Cape Cod Times.
There are currently five construction firms seeking to repair the boardwalk. Bids reportedly range from $3.17 million to nearly $5 million.
The boardwalk crosses Mill Creek and the marsh, leading to the Town Beach on Cape Cod Bay. Tourists flocked to the boardwalk in years past, posing for photos and taking in the scenic views.
Sandwich’s unique treasure was previously chosen by National Geographic as one of the top 10 boardwalks in the United States.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
