Hyannis man accused of hitting pedestrian with car, stabbing another person in Yarmouth

YARMOUTH, Mass. — A 30-year-old Hyannis man is accused of hitting a pedestrian with his vehicle as he was fleeing the scene after stabbing another person.

Matthew Amick was arrested after the incidents that happened late Friday afternoon.

Around 5:25 p.m. Friday, Yarmouth Police officers responded to Hoover Road in West Yarmouth for a reported disturbance.

While en route, officers were told that an individual involved in the disturbance may have been hit by a motor vehicle.

When they arrived to the scene, officers found a male laying on the road with severe lower body injuries.

Police said the suspect, later identified as Amick, had fled the scene and struck the victim in the process of fleeing.

Amick had also thrown a shovel through the front window of the residence and slashed two victims with a box cutter type instrument during the initial disturbance, police said.

Amick fled the Hoover Road address and traveled south on Willow Street into Hyannis. He struck a motor vehicle at the intersection of Camp and Willow streets and fled the crash scene without stopping.

Officers began searching the area and found Amick’s vehicle at a business on Willow Street.

A short time later, police found Amick hiding in a crawl space in the basement of his home on Spring Street in Hyannis. Officers used de-escalation tactics and successfully negotiated Amick out of the crawl space and took him into custody.

One of the victims was treated on scene and refused to be taken to the hospital. The second victim, a 63-year-old Yarmouth man, was taken by ambulance to a Boston Hospital. His condition was unknown on Saturday.

The incident remains under investigation by local and state police.
