Humpback whale dies after getting stranded off Cape Cod

WELLFLEET, Mass. — A humpback whale died after getting stranded off Cape Cod this week, officials said.

The International Fund for Animal Welfare says it received a report on Tuesday night about a struggling humpback whale in the shallow shores of Wellfleet, the non-profit said in a Facebook post.

The 24-foot-long, 7,900-pound whale ultimately succumbed to death and was hoisted out of the water on Thursday.

Officials noted that the whale is not one of the three juveniles that have been spotted feeding in the water off Plymouth.

“The poor body condition, identifying marks, and age of the animal enable researchers to determine this animal is not one of the three whales recently sighted off of Plymouth,” the IFAW said.

A necropsy is slated to be performed Friday to determine and whale’s exact cause of death.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
