Historic Paul Revere bell returning to Canton on Friday

Historic Paul Revere bell returning to Canton on Friday (Paul Revere Heritage Site)

CANTON, Mass. — A piece of history connected to Revolutionary War patriot Paul Revere - of the famed “Midnight Ride” - is returning to Massachusetts on Friday.

A 1,000-pound bronze bell that was cast by Paul Revere and Son in Canton in 1834 is being donated to the Paul Revere Heritage Site in Canton.

After establishing an iron and brass foundry in Boston, Paul Revere opened his foundry in Canton in 1801. Revere died in 1818 and his son Joseph Warren Revere ran the mill until his death in 1868. Historians believe the bell was originally bought and used at two churches in Ohio.

In 1984, a private family purchased the bell and moved it to Los Angeles, according to the Paul Revere Heritage Site.

Last year, the California family learned about the Revere & Son Heritage Trust Corporation in Canton and offered to donate the bell to the site.

The bell will be escorted by Canton Police from the town line to celebrate its arrival.
