Hingham Fire Department receives new ambulance engine after months-long wait

HINGHAM, Mass. — A Hingham ambulance is back on the roads after a months-long battle to get the vehicle a new engine.

The Hingham Fire Department first reached out to Boston 25 News in March after their 2019 Ford F-550 ambulance hadn’t moved since January because Ford doesn’t have the parts to fix it.

Fire Chief Steve Murphy said he was forced to rely on older, less-reliable ambulances and even borrow units from nearby Cohasset.

Soon after the department reached out to us, the firefighters were told the engine would be replaced soon. Now the fire department announced on Friday that Medic 2 is officially back in service to the community.

The Abington Fire Dept. was in a similar situation. Its 2019 Ford F-F50 ambulance was out of commission since October, in need of a new engine after suffering “catastrophic engine failure” but unable to be fixed due to supply chain issues.

But Thursday the department announced their ambulance is back on the roads.

CNN reported Ford ended September with between 40,000 and 45,000 unfinished large trucks and SUVs because the company didn’t have all the parts. The company’s U.S. sales dropped 10 percent in October because of the supply chain issues, CNN said.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as more information becomes available.
