Haverhill Mayor declares state of emergency after severe flooding and growing sinkhole

HAVERHILL, Mass. — Haverhill has declared a local state of emergency after extreme flooding washed out multiple towns on Tuesday.

Haverhill Mayor James Fiorentini joined several neighboring cities and towns in declaring a state of emergency as 22 adults and children living in a multi-family home at 5 Ford St., in the Mt. Washington neighborhood were evacuated Friday morning after a massive sinkhole caused by Tuesday’s torrential rain.

Mayor Fiorentini said the large sink hole, roughly 20 feet deep and 20 feet wide, tore open a large old brick sewer pipe, causing upward of $1 million in damages.

The city will be requesting financial aid from the state and federal government for the damaged businesses, private residences, and public infrastructure.
