Man falls 30 feet into underground storage tank in Monson

MONSON, Mass. — A 32-year-old man fell 30 feet into an underground water storage tank on Monday night in Monson.

At approximately 8:00 p.m., Westcomm Regional Dispatch received a call about a man who fell down a well in a remote part of the woods off Upper Palmer Road.

The victim was found approximately 30 feet down in what is believed to be an underground storage tank that was used to service the former Monson Developmental Center.

Crews set up a tripod system with ropes and pulleys to lower a first responder into the tank to rescue the victim.

Once the victim was retrieved, rescue teams had to transport him several hundred yards to a waiting ambulance.

The victim was transported to a nearby hospital with non life threatening injuries.

Upper Palmer Road was shut down for an extended period of time while extraction efforts were performed.

The Western Mass Technical Rescue Team also responded to the rescue.
