Gloucester man charged with disturbing the peace at Cohasset beach

COHASSET, Mass. — Cohasset Police have charged a Gloucester man with disturbing the peace and resisting arrest following an incident at Sandy Beach on Sunday.

Several people called 911 just before 1 p.m. to report a man, later identified as 51-year-old Steven Veator, harassing families and children, according to police.

Witnesses told the responding officer Veator was "yelling, swearing and acting strangely" in the beach's parking lot. They said he was yelling about the year 1776 and his rights being violated.

When the officer went to question Veator, he said Veator went into a wild tirade about 1776, people wearing masks and his civil rights being violated.

The officer said as he tried to get Veator to calm down, Veator got into a car being driven by a woman and yelled at her to drive away.

The officer repeatedly ordered Veator to get out of the car. When he finally did, he acted aggressively and assumed a fighting stance with the officer, police said. The officer drew his TASER and ordered Veator to the ground. As back-up officers arrived, Veator resisted arrest and continued to yell and scream.

Veator was booked at Cohasset Police Headquarters and later bailed. He’ll be arraigned at Quincy District Court in June.

Police also summonsed the driver of the car, 52-year-old Lisa Hennessey of Gloucester, to Quincy District Court for attaching plates, operating an unregistered and uninsured motor vehicle and not having an inspection sticker. Police had her car towed from the scene.
