CONCORD, N..H. — Wednesday is a big day for some 60,000 hunters in New Hampshire.
The regular firearms deer hunting season opens and runs through December 4th for most of the state, except the northernmost section of New Hampshire.
N.H. Fish and Game is reminding hunters to hunt carefully.
“We urge hunters to follow a few simple guidelines to hunt safely and enjoy their time in the woods,” says Josh Mackay, Fish and Game’s Hunter Education Coordinator.
Those safety tips include wearing blaze orange on your head back and chest if you are in the woods.
New Hampshire’s Fish and Game is also reminding all hunting enthusiasts to check the New Hampshire Hunting & Trapping Digest for specific regulations.
“Deer must be registered at the closest open registration station within 24 hours of harvest,” according to NH Fish and Game.
“Fish and Game biologists are stationed at several of the busier registration stations around the state to collect more detailed biological data on the state’s deer herd,” according to the agency. “Data collected at these biological check stations include body weights, antler measurements, reproductive assessments, and age estimates based on tooth wear. Such data are critical to helping track the health of the state’s deer population.”
The public is also encouraged to report any hunting violations to Fish and Game’s Operation Game Thief online anytime, or by calling the 24-hour hotline at 1-800-344-4262.
