FREEPORT, Maine — One of the most iconic retailers in New England has announced plans to lay off dozens of employees in an effort to combat a “fluctuating retail landscape.”
In a statement, an L.L. Bean spokesperson told Boston 25 News that it’s laying off 50-75 people, or about 2-3% of its Maine-based staff.
“As the company continues to evaluate the fluctuating retail landscape and adapt our organizational design to enable long-term growth, we will implement a small, focused workforce reduction to better align resources with company goals and objectives,” the spokesperson said.
The spokesperson noted that some departures will be voluntary and impacted employees will be provided severance packages and outplacement services.
News of this latest round of layoffs comes right before the holidays and marks the second wave of job cuts this year, the Bangor Daily News reported. In April, the company laid off customer service employees and shortened call center hours.
“Workforce reductions are always difficult and never a decision we make lightly,” the company spokesperson added. “We are committed to supporting those impacted with empathy, respect, and care just as we are committed to sustainable growth and building a strong future for our stakeholders.”
L.L. Bean, headquartered in Freeport, Maine, was founded in 1912 by Leon Leonwood Bean and specializes in clothing and outdoor recreation equipment.
