5 people displaced after roof collapses during Brookline house fire, officials say

BROOKLINE, Mass. — Fire crews from around the area responded to a fire at a home in Brookline.

Around 10:40 a.m., the Brookline Fire Department received reports of smoke coming from the attic of a home on Sargent Street.

Arriving companies found smoke billowing from a large, L-shaped, three-story residence and requested mutual aid. Officials say all five residents in the home were able to evacuate safely and there were no reports of any injuries.

According to Brookline authorities, the roof collapsed around 11 a.m., and companies on scene requested additional assistance to get the fire under control.

Drone video taken by Boston 25 shows heavy smoke coming out of the home.

After about 2 hours, the fire was contained.

“Companies that arrived on scene reported heavy smoke coming from the attic, able to get access, it was a very long driveway off the street, but the guys did a great job of getting the ladders up there and making sure they have access knowing that it was going to be a tough fight in the attic area,” said Chief John Sullivan. “We’re lucky that the temperature you know has been in our favor today, so no ice forming with a lot of water runoff so that was very lucky.”

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, although officials say it doesn’t seem suspicious.

Firefighters from the Boston, Cambridge, and Newton Fire Departments provided mutual aid and station coverage.
