Everett man arrested after holding down, beating cat with belt, police say

EVERETT, Mass. — An Everett man was arrested over the weekend after he was allegedly caught on camera assaulting an animal.

44-year-old Hector Quijada-Portillo is charged with animal cruelty and an outstanding warrant.

According to Everett Police, a concerned citizen came to the station Saturday around 9 p.m. and showed officers a video of a man, later identified as Portillo, holding down and beating a cat with a belt.

Officers responded to his residence on Broadway, placing him in custody without incident shortly thereafter.

He was arraigned Monday in Malden District Court.

Everett’s Animal Control Officer secured the cat.

No further information was immediately available.
