Students, staff allowed to return to Belmont elementary school after gas company determines no leak

BELMONT, Mass. — An elementary school in Belmont has been deemed safe to reenter after being temporarily evacuated after an odor of natural gas was detected in one of the stairwells.

The Belmont Fire Department and a gas company confirmed there is no leak within the Butler Elementary School, according to police.

Belmont Police will be escorting students and staff back to the school to resume their school day.

Students and staff were evacuated from the school and relocated to St. Luke’s Church on Lexington Street for shelter, police said.
