Eight injured in school bus crash on Route 20 in Shrewsbury

SHREWSBURY, Mass. — Police are investigating a school bus crash where eight people were injured Tuesday morning on Route 20 in Shrewsbury.

At 7:26 a.m. Shrewsbury police went to 1 Avalon Way at Route 20 responding to the crash. The accident involved an Al-Hamra Academy school bus and a tractor trailer, according to a news release from Shrewsbury police.

Seven of the 10 children riding to school, and the bus driver, suffered minor non-life-threatening injuries, police said. They were brought to UMass Medical Center.

The accident happened in the eastbound lane of Route 20. Shrewsbury town manager Kevin Mizikar said speed does not appear to be a factor, but said the crash is under investigation.

“The speed limit in this area was reduced by MassDOT from 50 to 45 MPH in 2020 after the Town requested a review of the speed limit,” Mizikar wrote in a statement to Boston 25 News.
