EF-1 tornado in Foxboro blew 105 mph, NWS says

EASTON — An EF-1 tornado touched down in Foxboro Saturday, bringing gusting winds over 100 miles per hour, the National Weather Service said Sunday.

One of the NWS survey teams confirmed an Ef-1 tornado touched down in a small neighborhood in Foxboro near the Mansfield town line and close to Easton.

Several large trees up to 2 feet in diameter were snapped by the trunk by the twister with winds of up to 105 miles per hour, according to the NWS.

Surveyors determined the tornado stayed on the ground for almost 300 yards before going into conservation land.

Brockton, East Bridgewater areas of Easton also were damaged by high winds, the NWS says.

“At about 8:30, we heard the rain start and the grill on our deck flew from one end of it to the next, and the next thing you know the power went out,” said Rob Citrano, who lives on Prospect Street in Easton. “The police told me that the whole town looks like this behind us. That’s what they told me.”

Citrano showed Boston 25 News crews several fallen trees in his backyard. “I didn’t realize the tree behind me had come down until my neighbor came out with his light, and that’s when I realized not only that tree came down, but a couple trees in my yard in the back right now are laying on our fence back there,” Citrano said. “A piece of our pool fence went flying into the woods.”

Easton police told Boston 25 News about five roads had to be shut down after the storm as trees and live wires came crashing down into the streets.

Authorities said they received dozens of calls for damage, but they did not get reports of any injuries.

Saturday was the second time in two weeks the Bay State community was grappling with tornado damage. On July 16, a tornado touched down 2 miles south southeast of North Brookfield. A tornado also touched down in Southern New Hampshire on Thursday.
