East Boston man arrested for firearm, drug charges after officers search his apartment for B&E call

BOSTON — An East Boston man was arrested and charged with firearm and drug offenses on Thursday after he called police of someone allegedly breaking into his apartment.

Around 10:37 a.m. Officers were dispatched to the area of Meridian Street to reports of a breaking and entering in progress and that the suspect was still inside the apartment.

Officers arrived on the scene and told the apartment owner to wait outside in the hallway.

While sweeping the area, officers did not find anyone in the apartment but did locate a loaded firearm magazine and holster in plain sight.

Officers also found an unlabeled pill bottle with a bag of fentanyl inside of it.

Officers placed the owner of the apartment, 55-year-old Carlos Cortez of East Boston, under arrest and charged him with the following:

  • Unlawful Possession of a Firearm
  • Unlawful Possession of a Loaded Firearm
  • Unlawful Possession of Ammunition
  • Possession of Class A.

Cortez is expected to be arraigned in East Boston District Court.
